Kriega R22 vs R30: daily carry or a larger travel load
Start with the R22 for a contained daily load. Consider the R30 when the gear you regularly need will not fit comfortably in that size of bag. The R30 combines a 30-litre quoted capacity with Kriega's full Quadloc harness, while the R22 uses Quadloc-Lite. Bigger capacity is useful only when it solves a real packing problem.

Define the trip before choosing the bag
A workday with a computer, lunch and a layer is a different assignment from carrying clothing for an overnight stay. Lay out both loads if one backpack must cover both. Then decide which trip should determine its size. Buying around a rare maximum means carrying the larger shape on ordinary days; buying around the minimum can leave you attaching extra luggage whenever plans change. Neither is automatically wrong, but the choice should be deliberate.
The larger model changes the support system
The R30 has the full Quadloc harness, six compression straps and two zipped front pockets. Its listed empty weight is 1,600g. Those features make it worth assessing as a complete loaded system, not just an eight-litre increase over the R22's nominal total. Compression can take up slack, but it does not make a large item smaller or guarantee that the bag will suit your riding position. Test the packing shape with the bulky objects you expect to carry most often.

Kriega identifies the main compartment as waterproof on both bags. That statement should not be extended to every external pocket. The R22's specified dry section is 18 litres; the R30 page quotes 30 litres of capacity and describes the waterproof main compartment without giving a separate measured allocation for its two front pockets. Avoid creating an exact dry-volume comparison that the specifications do not provide. Keep documents and electronics in the designated waterproof section and use outer storage selectively.
The better choice is the load you can control
A useful fitting exercise is to pack everything, close the bag and put it on over your jacket before sitting in your normal riding position. Check helmet clearance, access to the fastening and whether turning your upper body shifts the load. For the larger travel setup, repeat the exercise after removing the overnight items. This reveals whether the compromise still works on the commute.
Choose the R22 when daily convenience is the main requirement and its packing space works. Choose the R30 when the extra room is a recurring need and the loaded fit is convincing. We have not measured shoulder pressure, riding stability or comparative comfort; the recommendation follows the published design differences and the practical consequences of carrying your chosen load.
