Kriega R20 vs R22: choose access or a waterproof main compartment

Two litres is not the main difference

These bags make more sense when compared by the way you pack them. The R20 provides 20 litres behind a fully opening zip, while the R22 separates its load between a roll-top Drypack and front storage. That changes the morning routine more than the small difference in total capacity. Someone unpacking several items at a desk may value seeing the load at once. Someone leaving most of the contents untouched until the destination may find the waterproof compartment more useful.

Decide where the electronics will live

Kriega describes the R20 as suitable for a 13-inch laptop and the R22 main compartment as having capacity for a 17-inch laptop. These are manufacturer size claims, not measured sleeve dimensions. They do not establish that every computer with those screen sizes will fit, particularly with a protective case. Before ordering, check the actual computer's width, height and thickness and ask for confirmation against that shape. A broad laptop claim should not replace a physical fit check.

Rain changes the packing decision

The R22 is the more direct answer to a commute where clothes or documents must arrive dry without adding a separate bag around the main load. Keep those items inside the waterproof section and close it correctly. Do not transfer that protection to the front pocket by association. With the R20, plan a separate waterproof enclosure for vulnerable contents. That can work well if only one or two small items need protection, but include the enclosure when checking usable space.

Choose with your normal load

Both use Kriega's Quadloc-Lite harness, so this is not a comparison between an ordinary daypack and a motorcycle-specific harness. Try each over the jacket you actually wear, with your usual contents. Reach forward, turn your head and check whether the bag catches the helmet or crowds your shoulders. The same harness name cannot settle the fit of two differently shaped loads.

Our recommendation is conditional: the R20 suits access-led packing and an existing dry-bag routine; the R22 suits a dedicated dry main load. If you repeatedly open the bag for small items, make a list of those items first and decide where each will sit. This is a specification-based comparison, with no claim of a road test or measured comfort advantage.
