Kriega R20 vs R22: choose access or a waterproof main compartment

Two litres is not the main difference

These bags make more sense when compared by the way you pack them. The R20 provides 20 litres behind a fully opening zip, while the R22 separates its load between a roll-top Drypack and front storage. That changes the morning routine more than the small difference in total capacity. Someone unpacking several items at a desk may value seeing the load at once. Someone leaving most of the contents untouched until the destination may find the waterproof compartment more useful.

The outside shapes differ as well. Kriega publishes 470 × 280 × 150mm for R20 and 430 × 235 × 220mm for R22. R20 is taller, wider and shallower; R22 is shorter, narrower and deeper. These are exterior dimensions, not measurements of a rectangular usable cavity, but they provide a better reason to test your largest rigid item than the two-litre headline difference does.

Decide where the electronics will live

Kriega describes the R20 as suitable for a 13-inch laptop and the R22 main compartment as having capacity for a 17-inch laptop. These are manufacturer size claims, not measured sleeve dimensions. They do not establish that every computer with those screen sizes will fit, particularly with a protective case. Before ordering, check the actual computer's width, height and thickness and ask for confirmation against that shape. A broad laptop claim should not replace a physical fit check.

Rain changes the packing decision

The R22 is the more direct answer to a commute where clothes or documents must arrive dry without adding a separate bag around the main load. Keep those items inside the waterproof section and close it correctly. Do not transfer that protection to the front pocket by association. With the R20, plan a separate waterproof enclosure for vulnerable contents. That can work well if only one or two small items need protection, but include the enclosure when checking usable space.

Choose with your normal load

Both use Kriega's Quadloc-Lite harness, so this is not a comparison between an ordinary daypack and a motorcycle-specific harness. Kriega describes the harness as angled away from the underarms and size-set for click-in/click-out use. Those shared design details do not make loaded fit identical. Try each over the same jacket, reach forward and turn your head; the same harness can carry two differently shaped loads.

For someone already using a dry bag inside a backpack, the R20's fully opening zip may be the more useful feature. Starting without that arrangement makes the R22's dedicated dry section worth considering. List the small items you retrieve during the day and assign each a pocket before choosing: repeated access can matter as much as the main opening. The specifications support those packing differences; they provide no road-test evidence of a comfort advantage.

Where the R16 fits into the same decision

R16 is not simply a smaller R22. It provides one 16L waterproof roll-top body and no comparable 4L front pocket. Its published 480 × 240 × 140mm outside shape is taller but much shallower than R22. Choose it when one protected compartment handles the ordinary load and frequent outside access is unnecessary.

Compare dry capacity on the same basis: R16 offers 16L; R22 offers 18L in the waterproof main body, not the full 22L. The extra two dry litres may matter less than the R22 front pocket. R20 remains the different branch: a 20L zip-access layout whose main compartment is not documented as waterproof.
