Kriega R20: a practical guide to the zipped 20L pack
The R20 makes sense when you want easy access to a moderate daily load and are prepared to manage rain-sensitive items separately. Its main zip is convenient, but this is not one of Kriega’s waterproof roll-top models.

What the R20 actually provides
Kriega lists 20 litres, a 1,150g empty weight and outside dimensions of 470 × 280 × 150mm. The pack uses the Quadloc-Lite chest harness, four compression straps and a main compartment that opens fully. A separate front/side pocket keeps smaller items away from the main load. Those published outside measurements describe the bag, not the usable rectangle around a laptop or rigid container.
The inner sleeve can take an optional hydration reservoir or back-protector insert, and external attachment points accept additional US-Drypack storage. These accessories are separate choices; an accessory sleeve should never be read as proof that a certified protector is already inside.
What the material and harness labels do—and do not—tell you
Kriega specifies 500D Cordura for the R20 body and 1000D Cordura at the base and harness. That is a material description, not a measured abrasion test for this guide and not crash-protection certification. Inspect the seller's exact color and model code as well: the current manufacturer page lists KRU20 for black and KRU20-MCB for MultiCam Black.
The Quadloc-Lite harness is designed to be size-set and then fastened without readjusting it every time. R16 and R22 use the same named harness family, so the R20 does not win merely because of the harness label. Compare the packed shapes and adjust each over the same jacket; the R20 is the widest and shallowest of the three according to their published outside dimensions.

The practical question is which contents must arrive dry. For a commute involving documents, a computer and a change of clothing, plan a dry bag around those items before deciding whether the R20 is the right purchase. A zip that opens generously is useful at your desk but does not itself establish a waterproof enclosure.
Try the packed dry bag inside the backpack, not just the objects without it. Extra folds and closures can change how easily you reach a charger or lunch box. If this arrangement makes a simple daily routine cumbersome, compare a roll-top pack with a separate quick-access pocket.
Check the loaded fit
Take your actual laptop in its protective sleeve to a fitting. Screen diagonal tells you little about a thick chassis, reinforced corners or a bulky case. Put your normal contents around it and check that the zip closes without being pulled into tension.
Wear your riding jacket while adjusting the harness. With the bike stationary and securely supported, reproduce your normal riding posture and shoulder checks. Assess whether the top of the loaded bag interferes with your helmet and whether anything presses uncomfortably through the back panel.
When it earns a place on your shortlist
The R20’s fully opening main compartment favors a fairly consistent daily load that you want to reach easily. Choose it if you are happy to pack rain-sensitive belongings separately. For wet-weather laptop commuting, compare that extra packing step with a waterproof roll-top before buying; the 20L model name alone cannot settle which routine will be easier.
Use the R16 as the compact dry-storage check and the R22 as the divided dry-storage check. The R16 is 480 × 240 × 140mm outside with one 16L waterproof body. The R22 is 430 × 235 × 220mm outside with an 18L waterproof body and separate 4L front pocket. Those figures help explain shape and access, but none proves that a specific case or container fits.
