Kriega Trail9 vs Trail18: compare dry storage before total litres
Choose Trail9 when you need hydration plus a compact amount of dry gear. Choose Trail18 when clothing or other rain-sensitive cargo occupies more space. The important difference is four litres of waterproof storage in Trail9 versus eleven litres in Trail18's main body plus a separate one-litre waterproof pocket.

The capacity split explains the decision
Kriega's global Trail9 specification divides nine litres into a four-litre dry main section and a five-litre zipped compartment. Trail18 has an eleven-litre dry main body and a seven-litre zipped section that contains the one-litre waterproof pocket. That internal pocket is part of the layout, not an extra litre to add to the advertised eighteen. If most of your cargo must stay dry, the two bags differ much more than a simple compact-versus-large description suggests.
Include the filled reservoir in your trial load
Both product pages list compatibility with two- and three-litre hydration reservoirs, purchased separately. Reservoir capacity is not extra bag capacity. Pack with the bladder filled to your usual level before deciding how much space remains for tools or another layer. Water also contributes real carried weight, so trying an empty pack and an empty reservoir gives a misleading impression of the finished setup. Decide what you must drink and what you must carry, then select the bag around both requirements together.

View on Amazon ↗Read the model guideMore room brings more empty weight
The published weights are 1,030g for Trail9 and 1,630g for Trail18. The larger model therefore starts approximately 600g heavier before you add cargo. That is a meaningful trade if you only need the extra dry room occasionally. Conversely, choosing the smaller model and routinely hanging required equipment outside can defeat the purpose of a compact pack. An honest inventory is more useful than picking the largest capacity available or treating minimum weight as the only goal.
Use external storage intentionally
Both models have an elasticated Hypalon net for items such as wet gear. Our packing recommendation is to use that separation deliberately: keep damp clothing away from the dry contents, and check that anything outside remains securely retained. Do not count an external net as protected storage for a phone, documents or loose small parts. It also does not establish a universal helmet-carrying capability.
Trail9 makes sense when your dry essentials are genuinely small and the rest of the load is disciplined. Trail18 is the more suitable candidate when you need a substantial dry clothing compartment or the separate protected small-item pocket. Confirm the compartment split against the exact listing you buy; the specifications used here are Kriega's global pages. No riding or immersion test is implied by this comparison.
