A reservoir volume describes how much liquid it can hold. A backpack volume describes storage, which may include the compartment occupied by that reservoir. These figures should not automatically be added together. Decide how much room you need for both the filled system and the rest of the day's kit.
Kriega's Hydro-3 is built around an included 3L HydraPak reservoir and has a separate small-item side pocket. The Trail9 takes another approach, with 4L of waterproof cargo storage and a separate 5L zipped compartment compatible with a 2L or 3L reservoir sold separately. Those layouts serve different loads.
Check the exact package before comparing
A photograph of a drinking hose does not establish that the reservoir is included. Read the listing for the exact bundle, because the same backpack may be sold alone or together with a reservoir. Compare the complete package you would actually use.
If choosing your own reservoir, check the supported dimensions and attachment method as well as nominal litres. A bladder can have the right capacity and still be the wrong shape for the sleeve. Confirm that the filled reservoir leaves the bag able to close correctly.

Ask how you will remove the reservoir for filling and whether doing so requires unpacking dry belongings. A dedicated compartment can make that routine simpler. Look for a clear hose exit and retention points that follow the manufacturer's intended arrangement.
Try the routing over your riding equipment before use. The hose should be manageable without interfering with normal movement or requiring improvised loops around controls. If you intend to drink only during stops, make sure the valve is easy to stow and keep clean between them.
Buy a system you can maintain
Consider how the reservoir, tube and valve come apart for cleaning and drying. Kriega describes the Hydro-3 reservoir as reversible for cleaning and drying, a useful feature to evaluate if maintenance convenience matters to you. Follow the instructions for each component rather than assuming every bladder tolerates the same treatment.
Replacement valves, hoses and compatible reservoirs are worth investigating before purchase. A small worn component should not make an otherwise suitable pack unusable. Also consider where you will dry the system after a ride; storage convenience affects whether a hydration pack remains practical.
Run a realistic water-and-cargo check
Fill the intended reservoir for a stationary fitting and pack the rest of your normal belongings. Check the harness, closure and separation from electronics. Look for pressure from other objects on the reservoir and verify that fittings remain accessible.
Choose capacity around the route, refill opportunities and your own needs rather than treating one reservoir size as universal. If you regularly stop and prefer a bottle, a standard backpack or suitable bike luggage may meet the brief more simply. Hydration compatibility earns its place when you want the whole system, including its upkeep.
