Small motorcycle backpacks: compact size and low weight are different choices
Choose a small backpack by the outside shape, usable compartments and the complete load you carry—not litres alone. Trail9 is the lightest and smallest of these three; R16 provides one 16L dry body; Mach S carries 18–20.4L and still weighs 96g less than R16. Capacity, weather protection and empty weight are separate decisions.

Define the minimum useful load
A phone and wallet need a different carrying solution from a water reservoir, spare layer and lunch. Put your smallest regular load on a table first. Then add the one or two items that make the bag worthwhile on your normal rides.
If a laptop is part of that load, its dimensions may determine the minimum pack size before litres become relevant. A compact bag that cannot accept the device with the intended sleeve is not a useful commuter option, even when the remaining cargo would fit easily.
Read how the litres are divided
The Kriega Trail9 has 9L total capacity split into a 4L waterproof roll-top compartment and a separate 5L zipped hydration compartment. A filled optional reservoir uses space in that zipped section, so 9L is not uninterrupted dry cargo and it is not cargo plus water.
The Kriega R16 provides a different arrangement: a single 16L waterproof main compartment. A buyer carrying folded clothing or a lunch container may prefer one larger space even if the nominal size looks less minimal. Neither Trail9 nor R16 has a manufacturer-documented helmet carrier; do not turn Trail9's wet-gear net or R16's US-Drypack attachment points into one.
Compare outside shape as well as litres
Trail9 is documented at 400 × 210 × 130mm. R16 is 480 × 240 × 140mm. Trail9 is shorter, narrower and shallower on paper, while R16 buys substantially more dry main-compartment volume. Those outside dimensions do not prove the size or shape of the usable opening, but they do show why compact cannot be reduced to the smallest litre figure.
Oxford lists the filled Aqua V12 at approximately 400 × 240 × 120mm. That gives another compact reference point: similar listed height to Trail9, R16-like width and a shallower filled depth. Compare the loaded upper edge against helmet movement and the lower edge against the seat while the motorcycle is stationary and supported.

Kriega lists Trail9 at 1,030g and R16 at 1,346g. OGIO lists Mach S at 1,250g despite its larger 18–20.4L capacity. R16 therefore weighs 96g more empty than Mach S even though its stated capacity is smaller. Use the capacity converter when two manufacturers publish different volume units, while keeping litres and empty weight in separate columns. The result does not establish internal shape, a safe load or a comfort winner.
The weather and organization systems also differ. Trail9 provides 4L of dry cargo beside a zipped section, R16 provides one 16L dry body, and Mach S uses a water-resistant molded shell with expansion, a 13-inch-class laptop sleeve and removable helmet strap. Decide which features you would otherwise replace with accessories or a separate dry enclosure.
Consider a simple dry compartment
Oxford's Aqua V12 is another compact approach, with a 12L waterproof roll-top body, welded seams and an external zipped pocket described only as water-resistant. It is worth considering when your shortlist brief is a modest amount of dry storage rather than a dedicated hydration layout or helmet carrier.
Check the number and placement of openings against your routine. If everything lives in one compartment, a small pouch may help manage loose items. That can be useful simplicity, provided you are happy to open the main closure at stops and do not need multiple external access points.
Try the smallest and ordinary loads
A bag should manage a short outing as well as the day you fill it. Check whether its compression system can reduce unused space and whether the upper edge remains clear of your helmet in your riding position. Evaluate fit over your actual jacket rather than an everyday shirt alone.
Essentials strapped outside a small pack can undermine the compact shape you were trying to buy. If that happens on ordinary rides, try the next size with those same items inside. Compare the two loaded shapes, closure and organization; a slightly larger bag that contains the whole load may be the more manageable setup.
