Record the closed computer’s width, depth and thickness. If you use a protective sleeve, measure the sleeve with the computer inside it. Screen diagonal does not tell you the size of the chassis, and two computers marketed with the same screen size can have different proportions.
Keep the charger and any adapter in the trial load, even when they live outside the computer compartment. The question is whether the whole commuting setup fits. A laptop-only check can hide a problem that appears when lunch, clothing or a water container occupies the neighboring space.

OGIO describes the Mach 5’s padded laptop sleeve as fitting most 15-inch laptops. The word “most” leaves room for exceptions. Kriega describes the R22’s waterproof main compartment as having capacity for a 17-inch laptop, which is a different claim from specifying a fitted, padded computer sleeve. If a product page gives only the backpack’s overall dimensions, ask the maker or seller for the usable laptop compartment dimensions and the opening width. External measurements include the bag’s construction and other compartments. They should not be treated as a precise internal fit template.
Check insertion and closure as separate steps
Try the computer in its intended orientation without forcing it through the opening. Check that the base seats naturally, the retaining strap reaches as intended, and the top edge does not obstruct the zipper or roll-top closure. Then insert the remainder of the daily load and repeat the closure check.
Notice whether removing the computer requires bending the sleeve, dragging a corner past a tight seam or first taking out several unrelated objects. Those are practical usability reasons to change the layout or choose a different bag, even if the computer technically fits. If ordering online, obtain the fit information and review the return conditions before relying on an inch-size label. Keep padding, physical fit and water protection as three separate questions: confirming one does not establish the other two.
