Kriega R16: a compact waterproof daypack

What the compact design includes

Kriega lists a 16L waterproof roll-top body, a removable taped-seam liner, an internal zip pocket and room for a 15-inch laptop. Empty weight is 1,346g. It uses the Quadloc-Lite harness and a removable waist strap, with attachment points for compatible US-5 or US-10 Drypacks.

Optional hydration and back-protector accessories are supported. Those possibilities do not make them necessary for a commuter, and they are not a reason to assume the standard backpack includes a reservoir or protective insert. Specify your base carrying requirements first.

Make the single opening work for you

A simple interior is useful if your belongings naturally form a few groups. Try a computer sleeve, a small pouch for charging equipment and the other daily essentials in an arrangement that lets you remove the item you use most. Avoid adding organizers merely because space exists for them.

Close the roll-top fully with the complete load inside. Decide where keys and other stop-time items will live so that you are not repeatedly opening the dry main compartment for something small. If you regularly need access to several separate items, this exercise may reveal a preference for an external pocket.

Check compactness against your body

A smaller litre rating does not tell you whether the pack fits a shorter torso. Try it over your riding jacket and assess its position with the intended contents inside. Pay attention to the top of the bag during shoulder checks and to the lower edge when seated.

For computer use, test the machine in the case you actually carry. The 15-inch label is a manufacturer use case, not a measurement of the available pocket opening. Do not use external dimensions to promise room for a particular chassis.

Expand only after checking the daily load

Compatible additional storage can be useful, but it changes the setup you originally selected for compactness. If your ordinary journey already requires an extra pack, consider whether a single larger bag would be simpler to close, carry and organize. The R16 is most convincing when its own main compartment handles most days and any extension addresses an occasional, clearly defined need.

When the R16 is the better purchase than a larger Kriega

Choose the R16 when your normal dry cargo fits through a single roll-top opening and you do not need to reach small items in an external front pocket. The R22’s headline 22L can sound like a much larger dry bag, but its protected main compartment is 18L: only 2L more than the R16. Its separate 4L front pocket changes access and organization as much as overall capacity.

Pass on the R16 if getting one item means repeatedly unpacking the roll-top at every stop, or if your everyday load already fills it before adding your riding layers. Conversely, occasional extra cargo is a poor reason to carry a larger bag every day unless the expansion arrangement genuinely suits your routine. Compact capacity does not establish a comfortable torso fit: test the loaded bag over the jacket you actually use.
