Choosing a waterproof motorcycle backpack: check the compartment, not the label
Choose according to the waterproof space available after the bag is closed correctly. Look for an explicit manufacturer claim for the relevant compartment, its seam construction and closure instructions; fabric names, rain covers and water-resistant zips do not establish an IP rating.

Kriega's R25 V2 is a clear example of divided capacity: the current manufacturer specification identifies a 20L waterproof main compartment and 5L of additional quick-access storage. The practical implication is that a 25L load of vulnerable items does not automatically have a waterproof home. Match the version carefully when browsing older R25 listings.
Compare the two sealed-bag approaches
A removable liner lets the outer fabric and the waterproof barrier do different jobs. The Kriega R16 uses a taped-seam liner inside its roll-top main compartment. A buyer who wants to inspect or replace that barrier should check replacement availability and the instructions for attaching it correctly.
The Oxford Aqua V20 instead lists welded seams and waterproof construction, alongside a roll-top closure. Its external zipped pocket is described separately as water-resistant. Both approaches deserve consideration, but neither permits careless closing or turns every external pocket into dry storage.

A bag that relies on an external cover adds a deployment step. Consider whether you can stop conveniently, whether the cover is accessible beneath your normal load, and whether it fits the bag when expanded. Check the specified attachment points rather than assuming an elastic edge alone suits motorcycle use.
Alpinestars lists a fully enveloping rain cover with the Tech Aero Backpack while describing the pack as water-resistant. That is a cover-based weather strategy. A rain cover can be useful, but its inclusion is not an IP certification, an immersion claim or proof that every opening underneath is sealed.
Look beyond a photograph of beading water
A spray photograph tells you little about seams, closure folds or the edge of a pocket. Read the product description and care instructions for the exact model. If a seller says waterproof while the manufacturer only says water-resistant, base the decision on the narrower verified statement or request clarification.
Keep an independent protective pouch in the plan for especially vulnerable items where appropriate. It also creates a clear place for documents or electronics when you transfer them to another bag. Do not count that pouch as free capacity: its thickness and closure need space.
Check the bag in its closed state
Before removing tags, pack your intended load and follow the closure instructions completely. If you can fit everything only by reducing the required rolls, stretching a zip or leaving part of the liner unsecured, the practical dry capacity is insufficient.
Finally, consider the arrival routine. A wet outer surface can drip onto a desk even while the contents remain dry. You may want a place to hang the pack and a separate pouch for wet gear. Waterproof storage solves water ingress; it does not organize wet and dry belongings for you.
